Allow me to introduce myself. My name is Jerry Brainum, and anyone who has read bodybuilding magazines over the past 35 years will likely recognize my name. I’ve had over 5,000 magazine articles published under my own name and various pen names. I was the science editor of Muscle and Fitness magazine for 10 years; editor-at-large at Flex magazine for 8 years. I’ve also written for Men’s Fitness magazine; Sports Fitness magazine; Muscular Development magazine; Muscle Mag International, and was a regular contributor to Ironman magazine for 28 years. Most recently, I was the science editor of Planet Muscle magazine. I’ve also written for many magazines outside of bodybuilding, including Penthouse and Let’s Live magazines. My articles have appeared in the foreign editions of over 30 international publications. I’ve won several writing awards, too. I’ve given seminars all over the world about nutrition and food supplements, and have lectured to the National Football League Player’s Association on the topic of “How to build muscle and strength without using anabolic drugs.” I’ve also lectured on the practical use of nutrition to treat mental illness to the Psychology department at UCLA. I’ve written an e-book for natural or drug-free bodybuilders called Natural Anabolics.
Besides my writing, I’ve been a nutrition consultant for numerous elite, world-class athletes. These include basketball star, Vlady Divac; Vassiily Jirov, voted the “best boxer” at the 1996 Summer Olympic Games, and Cruiserweight boxing champion of the world, 1999-2003; Floyd Mayweather Jr, undefeated boxing champ; Genaro Hernandez, Super-Featherweight boxing champ; Featherweight pro fighter, David Kamau. I served as Oscar de La Hoya’s nutrition consultant for three years and 12 undefeated boxing matches.
I was a competitive bodybuilder myself, and trained with Arnold Schwarzenegger at the original Gold’s gym in Venice, California in the 1970s. Since then, I’ve also worked with other elite bodybuilders in helping them achieve top condition. Arnold Schwarzenegger has called me in recent years to ask about subjects related to nutrition. Frank Zane, a three-time Mr.Olympia winner, has said that my articles were the only articles he read in bodybuilding magazines.
Testimonials
I’ve been involved in bodybuilding for many years, starting at the teenage level up to the professional ranks.During my career, I’ve learned a great deal about how the body performs, not only nutritionally, but scientifically as well. I like to think that I have more knowledge than the majority of people in this field, as I’ve been involved in the medical side for more than 20 years as well.Rarely do I take people’s advice on these subjects, unless the advice is coming from Jerry Brainum. He has taught me more valuable information, and I continue to learn more from him even today.Jerry’s Applied Metabolics Newsletter will be a big plus to all of us who are always trying to expand our knowledge. I can’t wait to start reading it!
–Troy Zuccolatto, 1989 NPC National Bodybuilding champion.
I arrived in California in late 1978. One of the first people that I met was Jerry Brainum. I soon realized that Jerry and I had one thing in common: We were both friendly guys who took time out to talk to and help people.I soon realized that Jerry was an extremely knowledgeable guy. After talking with him, it soon became apparent that his knowledge of nutrition and exercise was incomparable. I wound up speaking with him quite a bit,and he provided help to me in the most sophisticated manner. Jerry is like a walking encyclopedia, or more like a human incarnation of Google. Jerry is a true class act, and I am honored to have his friendship for life.
–Samir Bannout, 1983 Mr.Olympia, Owner BN International, Inc.
I had the honor or meeting Jerry Brainum back in the early 90s.I was just an amateur back then. We would see each other from time to time at Gold’s gym in Venice. But I truly got to know this man when I met with him at the request of Joe Weider.I was shocked and amazed about Jerry’s knowledge of dieting, nutrition, and training. From that day on, I never looked at Jerry in the same way. In fact, at one of my IFBB pro competitions, I was in urgent need of some nutritional assistance. Jerry was called to my room and got me squared away. I went on to win that competition. I would like to thank Jerry for what he’s done for me and our sport of bodybuilding.
__Ken “Flex” Wheeler, 1992 NPC USA champion, Arnold Classic champ, 1993, 1997,1998, 2000. Second place, Mr,Olympia, 1999.
I can’t emphasize how much I value straight, to the point, factual information on anything, but especially health and fitness. When it comes to sifting through scientific research and case studies relevant to superior care of the body, such as that related to physiology, nutrition, weight/strength training, newer training techniques, and even anti-aging, I appreciate the efforts of Jerry Brainum for doing the heavy lifting for us. That is, sorting through the never-ending influx of information, and alerting us to the plethora of misinformation that we are constantly exposed to.Jerry Brainum is serious about what he writes. He’s been involved in our sport in an important way since day one. And I like the fact that he has “Brain” right there, in black and white, in his name!
–Rachel McLish, Ms.Olympia, 1980, 1982.
I’ve had the pleasure of knowing Jerry Brainum for over 30 years. When I first arrived in the United States, I recall reading an article in Muscle and Fitness written by Jerry, and was extremely impressed about how insightful it was. I eventually met Jerry for a lunch meeting. I asked him many questions, all of which he answered without hesitation. I could not believe how knowledgeable he was. Jerry refused to charge me for this consultation, saying,”You are Reg Park’s son, so it is my pleasure.” I realized that Jerry was a big fan of my father, and we become close friends after that. My dad was also very fond of Jerry as a person, and very impressed with his knowledge.
Over the years,Jerry has done numerous seminars, some with my father, and others for my staff and clients. After giving one seminar for the psychology department at UCLA, one of the psychologists remarked that Jerry was a “walking encyclopedia.”Jerry and I have worked with numerous professional athletes over the years, with Jerry supervising the nutrition aspects, and myself and the rest of the team handling the training and conditioning part of the preperation. When working with professional boxers, Jerry was able to help them make their weight limit without ever resorting to the extreme methods often used for the same purpose. Jerry has also designed personalized nutrition programs for many of my clients at the Legacy gym, much to their benefit and health.Jerry is, by far, the most knowledgeable person I’ve ever met regarding nutrition and supplementation. I’ve learned a great deal from him, and along with my father, consider him one of my mentors.More importantly, he is a great friend, and a very kind, compassionate, and caring human being.

During my 35 years of training and competing, there is ONE source for info, which has consistently proven to be THE go-to person for fitness information, fat-burning techniques, and novel ways to build muscle mass. That source is Jerry Brainum.Jerry’s “in the trenches” background with many bodybuilding greats, combined with his meticulous research makes every other source obsolete.
–Joe DeAngelis, 1988 Mr.North America, 1990 Mr.USA, 1991 Mr.America
I have known Jerry Brainum for over 25 years.During that time, he has always been the “go to” guy for me and many other pro bodybuilders. He has always been on the cutting edge of nutrition, training, and ergogenic aids in our sport. When you want a “no B.S” answer, you ask Jerry Brainum.
–Jeff Poulin, 1994 IFBB North American Bodybuilding champion.
My friend, Jerry, asked me to endorse his newsletter. Actually, I’m doing you a favor if you train hard and eat to be a better you. My name is Bob Fritz. Since the early 80s, I helped pioneer the first creatine food supplement, branched-chain amino acid supplements, milk peptides, unflavored original Muscle Milk, pet products, and more. After three decades of producing hits, little impresses me.But Jerry does.In an industry of me-too hacks mouthing the same crap that’s decades old, Jerry is the only person whose work that I read. I mean it. I can read or talk to anyone I choose, I choose Jerry. He gets it right because he approaches it right. He’s a skeptic. He actually reads scientific studies. And I mean arcane, wonk work only a handful of Ph.Ds publish or understand. Jerry reads them, and fully understands what they say. What sets him apart from others is that he connects the dots between this study, and dozens of others.Jerry sees the forest and the trees. That’s rare air from someone who traffics himself in that world. You want info that you can put to use to get faster, stronger, leaner–or maybe live longer–it’s no contest as to who to listen to.You can try trial and error, or read B.S sales literature. The most precious thing you’ll waste isn’t money, but time.Every day that goes by without “feeding your head” means a day you can be making gains.Jerry will feed your head, so you can feed yourself for progress. Hands down, Jerry Brainum is the best in the business, without peer. This is coming from a guy who has had his fingerprints on almost every legitimate supplement over the last three decades. If you want to make every mouthful, set, rep or protein shake count, read anything by Jerry. So, yes, I endorse his newsletter because it’s from him.

The most important and knowledgeable person that I have encountered during my successful 40-year bodybuilding career is Jerry Brainum. He gave me the edge when it came to preparing for competitions by providing me with vital information related to training and diet. This is the same type of information that will appear in his upcoming newsletter.Jerry gave me the schooling that I needed to develop one of the greatest physiques of all time. His knowledge on the inner workings of the body, along with supplementation, including how to best use these powerful nutrients to build muscle and burn fat, has helped my journey to the winner’s circle to be a frequent one. With Jerry’s advice, I was able to win the Sandow trophy at the first Master’s Mr.Olympia in 1994. That enabled me to achieve “legend” status, and become a member of the Bodybuilding Hall of Fame. If you are serious about your bodybuilding, Jerry’s newsletter will provide you with the information that you need to build your championship physique. I strongly suggest that you subscribe today, and read each issue start to finish.

I have known Jerry Brainum for 44 years. Jerry has a comprehensive knowledge of nutrition, and can help anyone reach their goals, whether that involves building muscle, preparing for a bodybuilding or fitness contest, losing body fat, or just getting in top physical condition. He has written over 5,000 articles during the past 35 years. He was very instrumental to me when I was competing, and helped me avoid a lot of mistakes that would have interfered with my contest prep. Besides myself, he has worked with numerous world-class elite athletes, and his help proved successful in every case. For example, not one of the professional boxers that Jerry worked with ever lost a match while he advised them, except for one, who chose to ignore Jerry’s advice. Whatever your goals in the way of fitness, competition, or health, reading Jerry’s work is the best way to go, by far.

I first met Jerry in the early 80s,when he submitted a couple of articles for Sports Fitness magazine.I loved his work, bought both articles, and he became a regular contributor to the magazine. Each passing year, his writing became more insightful and supported with solid research.More than 30 years have passed since those days, and Jerry has actually found a way to continue honing his skills as a writer, along with his insights as a fitness and bodybuilding expert. This is a rare and valuable combination! In the wake of the near-demise of the magazine business, I am as excited as I can be that he is launching a web-based newsletter, “Applied Metabolics.”This will be his voice, and I suspect that it will be loud and sought after as it has been for the last several decades. If you are serious about your training, if you are serious about your profession in the fitness and sports fields, you will need this publication. No one else is doing this work! Only Jerry Brainum. Good Luck, Jerry. You have a very large fan club!
—Fred Hatfield, “Dr.Squat,” former world record-holder in powerlifting, member of the Powerlifting Hall of Fame, President, International Sports Science Association.
Jerry Brainum is unique among writers because he has the ability to bridge the gap between highly technical medical and nutritional information, yet can interpret and translate that often esoteric information into a form that is both understandable and readable to anyone, regardless of science background. He has acquired a broad knowledge gained in over four decades of constant study to the extent that he is able to answer even the most complicated questions related to science. He also stays on the cutting edge through keeping up with the latest research and concepts in science that have practical value to anyone interested in health, fitness, and nutrition. I would not hesitate to strongly recommend his newsletter as a factual and accurate source of useful information.
